The Journey Begins

Caroline Bae

Welcome to The Intersection's first blog post! We are so excited to have you here! This post will serve to detail upcoming plans for posted content and hopefully promote understanding of feminist philosophy.

I have had the idea to create a platform to discuss both feminism and philosophy for a while, but I only recently realized that a blog would be the perfect format! (Feel free to check out the "About Me" section for more information about The Intersection's origin.)

This blog will include biweekly posts that feature influential and inspiring female leaders, humanitarian crises predominantly affecting women, and developments in the fight for gender equality. This blog will also discuss the presence of philosophical and ethical frameworks in everyday life and in relation to feminism.

The "Learn" section of this website contains detailed information about the topics of feminism, philosophy, and the connection between these fields, but I wanted to reiterate exactly what the term "feminist philosophy" means.

First, let's start with a little bit of history. Many of the early feminist philosophers commented on issues raised by the women's liberation movement of the 1960s. These philosophers used their particular perspective to investigate equal opportunity, abortion, and the institutions of marriage and love, among other topics.

As more women received a higher education and became exposed to the field of philosophy, contemporary feminist philosophical scholarship surfaced in the 1970s. Female philosophers began examining topics with input from their personal experiences and the feminist movements at the time. They asked questions like, What are women doing? What social, political, and economic circles are they excluded from? How do the expectations of women differ from those of men?

Over time, the field of feminist philosophy has certainly evolved, but the core questions and motivations remain. Put simply, feminist philosophy is a way of looking at philosophical work, thinking, and questions with acknowledgement of the female perspective and experience. This blog will use feminist philosophy to analyze topics and problems in the world around us.

Thank you for reading!
